The red and black pennants flutter briskly and the screech of tyres and the roar of high revved engines reverberate the seemingly calm day at the Dubai Autodrome where some delectable automobiles shod with equally fantastic footwear are put to the test. Actually, not the cars are the objects of this fervent attention, but rather the black spheres that provide the contact between automobile and road and these are Yokohamas latest and best performance tyres Advan Sport and Advan S.T. And here, in Dubai, on a magnificent press-conference held on December 5 2004 Yokohama presented its new concept for development and its plans for Advan to eventually replace Yokohama as a brand worldwide. The Advan brand has been around for quite a while now and is synonymous with high performance tyres. It is the soul of Yokohama. Representing highest performance and quality concepts, the Advan is Yokohama Rubbers symbolic brand. In the past, the brand has covered sports category tyres mainly in Japan. Now the thinking is to develop it to a top-of-the-line brand in all tyre categories including luxury and sport utility vehicle (SUV) tyres. Advan has also started its way forward in the OE segment.

Yokohama had laid out a line-up of some very fast cars at the Autodrome for the media to test their tyres on the Mercedes-Benz SL range including a SL600 tuned by Lorinser and the potent Porsche Cayenne. Some of the cars employed tyres by Yokohama's competitors so a clear perspective could be formed vis-?-vis the capabilities of the Advan rubber. Under the Advan global strategy, Yokohama launched two new tyres in Dubai the Advan Sport (V103) for super sports cars and the Advan S.T. (V802) SUV tyre.

Yokohama Advan Sport

Advan Sport is a tyre based on a new concept that boasts ultra-high performance as well as driving comfort and quietness. It has been developed to succeed and further the excellent kinetic performance of the AVS Sport, Yokohama's conventional flagship tyre for sports car, in order to achieve superb performance at high speeds. The Advan Sport is available in 66 sizes ranging from 205/55ZR 17 to 295/25ZR22. Most noteworthy about the Advan Sport tire is its construction since it is the first tire in the industry to use nanotechnology a process in which components are engineered at one nanometer (one billionth of a meter) or less which allows to make tread compounds - super-fine silica, polymer and carbon materials that bond at a molecular level. The result is a compound that can grip extremely fine surfaces and irregularities and the tread contact area is increased by 10% for better wet and dry traction through a variety of temperature ranges. These qualities are also enhanced by the asymmetric design of the tread. Four wide circumferential grooves quickly and efficiently evacuate water for enhanced wet traction. Finely cut into the walls of the four main grooves, there are small grooves that control the stress to the block and promote even wear. In order to safely handle high speeds and ensure maximum stability, the ADVAN Sport is constructed from some of the most durable materials to the most exacting standards. There are Triple Edge Cap Plies with Overlap Construction. By placing one cap ply across the tread in an S pattern, two layers are formed at the shoulders. A second cap ply is then added, creating three layers at the shoulders and two layers across the middle of the tread for enhanced durability at extreme speeds. The plies are constructed from rayon strips chosen because of their stable nature to protect against heat. The rayon strips are wound at a 50% overlap creating a jointless, double layered ply. The sidewall construction features high-stiffness bead fi ller, sidewall compounds and steel reinforcements to improve high-speed capabilities and handling. ADVAN SPORT is for vehicles such as: Acura RL, Audi A4, A6, A8, Bentley Continental GT, Bentley Continental Flying Spur, BMW 3, 5, 6, 7 series, BMW M3, M5, M6, Ferrari F360, Infi niti G35, Mercedes C, E, S class, Mercedes CL, CLK, SL, SLK, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayman S, Porsche 911.

Yokohama Advan ST

ADVAN S.T. has been developed as an ultra-high performance tire to suit the next generation of SUVs. The ST unites the best elements of truck and passenger tires and is designed to meet load carrying capacity as well as high-speed requirements of the new sporty, high-performance SUVs. Advan ST is available in 30 sizes, from 17 to 24 inches and with 65 to 30 series aspect ratios and has speed ratings W and Y. The W-shaped multidirectional grooves are uniquely shaped in order to quickly expel water for enhanced rubber-to-road contact and grip on wet road surfaces. The continuous solid center rib provides exceptional steering response, high-speed capability and straight-line stability. Two wide circumferential grooves help channel and evacuate water for excellent wet traction. Large blocks along the shoulder enhance lateral stability when cornering. Five different sizes of tread blocks placed at varying intervals disperse pitch noise for a quieter ride. Yokohamas steel belts are strengthened to maximize traction by keeping the tread flat on the road surface as the added tensile strength enhances rigidity and maintains tire shape. The new compound utilizes silica particles which create massive traction in hot, dry conditions as well as cold, wet conditions. ADVAN S. T. is for vehicles such as: Acura MDX, BMW X5, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Lincoln Aviator, Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, Mercedes-Benz ML500, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover HSE, VW Touareg.
